This new critical edition of Ethiopic Enoch is a reworked
form of a doctoral dissertation presented to the University of London in
1974. Since 1959 Profs. M. Black and E. Ullendorff had projected a new
edition of I Enoch with a fresh translation and an exegetical
commentary. Ullendorff eventually entrusted the major part of this
project, the critical edition and translation of Ethiopic Enoch, to his
student M.A. Knibb. An important part of Knibb's dissertation was the
comparison of the Ethiopic text of Enoch with the Greek and Aramaic
versions of the writings.
Vol. 1 contains a text (Ryland Ethiopic MS 23) with a critical apparatus giving the Ethiopic and Greek variants;
Vol. 2 contains an introduction and notes on the text, in which all the significant Aramaic evidence is presented and discussed.
